Thank You

There are many aspects including the history of Hong Kong, war operations, treatment of Far East POWs, the selfless act of the Chinese fishermen, inextricably linked to the sinking of the Lisbon Maru. Each have their own stories and we must give thanks to all those who have kept and continue to keep these Lisbon Maru stories alive.

Major (retired) Brian Finch

Major (retired) Brian Finch is an ex-serving member of the Middlesex Regiment. He had heard the stories of the sinking of the Lisbon Maru from other soldiers of the regiment, who were fortunate to survive the tragedy and continued to serve within the regiment, after their release from Japanese Prisoner of War camps. The hand drawn picture of the sinking of the Lisbon Maru, by a member of the US Navy was also hung in the regiment's Officers' Mess.

Brian Finch is the translator of A Faithful Record of the Lisbon Maru Incident, which describes the events through the eyes of the Chinese fishermen, who saved the lives of hundreds of POWs and prevented a total massacre. Details of this book can be found on our Further Information page.

Brian is a long-time supporter of our cause and has helped us with many projects, including the UK memorial.

Tony Banham

Tony Banham continues to live in Hong Kong and works as a writer and historian. He has written several well researched books on the war in Hong Kong, including Not the Slightest Chance: The Defence of Hong Kong, details of which can be found on our Further Information page.

His Hong Kong War Diary also documents many parts of the story, including the 1941 defence of Hong Kong and the fates of the defenders and their families until liberation.

The Fishermen and their Families

The Chinese fishermen from Qingbang and Miaozihu Dongji Town, Zhoushan, East China, saved the lives of hundreds of POWs and prevented a total massacre. Their families cared for the survivors the fishermen had saved and their descendants have welcomed many families to the islands.

Fang Li

Fang Li directed and produced the documentary film The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru. His tireless research in seeking out survivors and families of many of the men, ensured their stories would be told and reach a much wider audience.
