Personal history before the war

Wartime experience

In December 1941 Geoffrey C. Hamilton was a Private in No 1 Company of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps. He was then commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant and posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scots. He became Company Commander for a few hours until the surrender of Hong Kong.

Geoffrey was held as a Prisoner of War in Sham Shui Po. Then in September 1942 he was loaded aboard the Lisbon Maru. He wrote an account of his experiences in "The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru", published by the Green Pagoda Press Ltd.

Geoffrey was transported to Osaka and then in April 1945 he was moved to Oeyama. He wrote of his experiences in "Prisoner of War in Hong Kong and Japan 1941-1945" now at the Imperial War Museum.

Personal history post-war

After Japan’s surrender, Geoffrey sailed on the Empress of Australia bound for England and in October 1945 docked in Liverpool.
