Personal history before the war

George and Agnes Green, of Warrington, Lancashire had two sons. The youngest was Herbert, who was an outstanding student at Boteler Grammar School, Warrington.

Herbert was employed as a telegrapher.

Wartime experience

Herbert joined the Royal Navy on 9th April 1940.

Ship/Shore establishments Herbert served on and his ranks:

Ordinary Signalman:

  • HMS Royal Arthur April 1940 to July 1940
  • HMS Victory I July 1940 to November 1940
  • HMS Dauntless November 1940 to May 1941

Signalman:

  • HMS Dauntless May 1941 to August 1941
  • HMS Tamar August 1941 to December 1941
  • HMS Victory III (POW) December 1941 to October 1942

Herbert's death at the age of 22 had a devastating effect on his small family. The scroll commemorating his death was kept in prime position on the wall over the mantlepiece.
