George and Agnes Green, of Warrington, Lancashire had two sons. The youngest was Herbert, who was an outstanding student at Boteler Grammar School, Warrington.
Herbert was employed as a telegrapher.
Herbert joined the Royal Navy on 9th April 1940.

- HMS Royal Arthur April 1940 to July 1940
- HMS Victory I July 1940 to November 1940
- HMS Dauntless November 1940 to May 1941
Signalman:
- HMS Dauntless May 1941 to August 1941
- HMS Tamar August 1941 to December 1941
- HMS Victory III (POW) December 1941 to October 1942
Herbert's death at the age of 22 had a devastating effect on his small family. The scroll commemorating his death was kept in prime position on the wall over the mantlepiece.
