Personal history before the war

Wartime experience

Martin was with the machine guns in Hong Kong. He was wounded during the Battle for Hong Kong.

He survived the sinking of the Lisbon Maru and being a POW in Kobe House. During his time in Kobe House Martin wrote a diary of his time in captivity.

Personal history post-war

Martin's diary from Kobe House was published as "Guest of an Emperor" in 1948 (now out of print).
