Personal history before the war

George Herbert Boothroyd was born to Mary Elizabeth (née Hollingworth) and George Boothroyd (dairy farmer) and he lived at Top o' th' Hill Farm, South Crosland, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

He was educated at South Crosland National School and Huddersfield Technical College and then worked as a costing clerk at Armitage Bridge Mills.

Wartime experience

George joined the Royal Navy in 1939 and was serving in Hong Kong, where he was captured by the Japanese on 25th December 1941. He was subsequently transported on the Lisbon Maru bound for Japan, but sadly he did not survive the sinking.

An article in the Huddersfield Examiner on 15th August 1942 reported that George, who had previously been reported as missing had now been officially reported to be a Prisoner of War. A further article in the same newspaper on 9th January 1943 reported that the Japanese authorities now state that he is missing following the sinking of a Japanese vessel which was carrying British Prisoners of War. Then on 29th September 1945 the Huddersfield Examiner reported that the Admiralty had now stated that George had lost his life following the sinking of the S.S. Lisbon Maru in October 1942.

Personal history post-war

George is commemorated on the Roll of Honour at Holy Trinity Church and the War Memorial both in South Crosland and also on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

The family farm, Top o' th' Hill, continued until around 2015.
