Ernie was the son of Ernest and Amelia Martha Shirley and the older brother of Amelia Maud Shirley.
He was a career soldier, serving in India and China before the war. He was married in 1932 to Helen Sanders.
He was serving with the the Royal Artillery in China and Hong Kong during the war and was taken prisoner during the fall of Hong Kong in 1941.
