Personal history before the war

William Grant Shepherd was born near Forfar, Angus Scotland.

Wartime experience

He survived the sinking of the Lisbon Maru.

Personal history post-war

Upon his return to Scotland after his time as a POW in Japan he could not settle into the life he had known. He lost a younger brother who was in the Royal Air Force who had been shot down over Berlin. My father always was torn between being grateful that he survived and the guilt of all those who were lost and passed during the war.

He immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada in 1949, married in July 1950 to Margaret Stewart (also of Forfar, Scotland).

They had two daughters Moira Somers and Linda King who both live in Canada. As well they have 3 grandchildren and 5 great grand children who all live in Manitoba and Alberta Canada.

Grant was employed by the Manitoba Provincial Government Dept. Of Labour and retired as Director of the Apprenticeship Division.
