Personal history before the war

My father was Cyril Mace. He was born on 3rd November 1914 in Shipston.

Wartime experience

Cyril Mace was Sergeant of the 8th and 12th South Coast Regiment Royal Artillery in Hong Kong.

He was captured on 25th December 1941 and taken to Sham Shui Po POW Camp. From there he was transferred to the Lisbon Maru, along with his comrades and placed in Hold 3. It is well documented that there were very few survivors from Hold 3.

He spent three days in the sea drifting on a plank of wood and then he was rescued by Chinese fisherman and taken to an unknown island. He said he went on to spend three months on the island with another POW from the Lisbon Maru.

However, he was recaptured by the Japanese and was held as POW for a further 3 years in Kan Wong until 1945, then onto Hakodate 2b POW Camp in May 1945 until August 1945.

After his release he travelled home via Canada and New York.

Personal history post-war

He returned home and became a postman for many years.
